SALEM This year's state wrestling tournament was moved from
Portland to The Pavilion at the state fairgrounds in Salem, and no one
liked the move better than Cascade sophomore Tyler Phillips.
Phillips won the 3A state championship in his 119-pound division with
an 11-10 decision over Tillamook senior Brian Jacob.
It was easier sleeping in my own bed and I was in better shape
than he was, Phillips said. All those early morning
practices also helped.
Phillips, who was 36-3 on the season, said while he was standing on the
winner s platform to receive his medal he kept saying to himself,
I don't believe this really happened.
It didn t set in until Sunday afternoon, he added.
With his first championship out of the way, Phillips, whose father Tom
Phillips is varsity wrestling coach at Cascade, said he will set his
sights on matching the accomplishments of older brother Brett, who was
a three-time 3A state champion in the 112-pound weight class.
For Cascade, which placed 22nd in the tournament, junior Jarrod Kamstra
placed sixth at 171 pounds and 275-pound Jason Mentzer, a senior,
placed eighth.
Stayton, which finished 3.5 points behind Cascade, had four placers:
senior Chris Porter placed third at 160, sophomore Nate Wixom placed
fifth at 103, senior David Smith placed eighth at 135 pounds, and
junior Cameron Koumentis placed eighth at 145.
